1. Briefly discuss the history and future
of multimedia. How might multimedia be used to improve the lives of its users?
How might it influence users in negative ways? What might be its shortcomings?
The term "multimedia" was introduced by
Bob Goldstein to promote the July 1966 opening of his "LightWorks at
L'Oursin" show at Southampton, Long Island. In the 1993 first edition of
McGraw-Hill’s Multimedia: Making It Work, Tay Vaughan declared
“Multimedia is any combination of text, graphic art, sound, animation, and
video that is delivered by computer. History has proven that advances in the
way we communication cultures like the transaction from radio to TV, marks a
whole new era of communication by using multimedia which combining text, sound
and images.
Implementation of multimedia for today and the
future reflect the innate desire of man to create outlets for creative
expression, to use technology and imagination to gain empowerment and freedom
for ideas that will propel all of us into a better world. The future of
multimedia will include high - band - width access to a wide array of
multimedia resources and learning material whenever multimedia are being use in
business, schools, home, medical, entertainment and event in public places.
Multimedia is very important to improve the lives
of its users. Nowadays application for multimedia included training,
presentation, advertising, simulations, databases, talk, open ceremony,
functions, etc. For example, flight attendants learn to manage international
terrorism through simulation. Medical doctors and veterinarians can practice
surgery methods via simulation prior to actual surgery. Presentation documents
attached to e-mails. Video conferencing, Bluetooth and WI - Fi is widely
available. Interactive TV (ITV) is widely used among campuses to join students
from different locations into one class with one teacher. Flash animation
presentation is used to smooth the talk; multimedia light is used to make
people in concert have a high spirit, graphic illustration is used to help
students more understanding about one particular subject, etc.
However, multimedia might
influence users in negative ways such as violations of the right of human being
and user’s privacy. For example, let us look at the Facebook violations; some
advance multimedia user who has a grudge over another Facebook user may use
Adobe Photoshop to edit their pictures so madness such as change picture of
their head with the head of porn star. In addition, some news companies either
TV or newspaper doing something immoral such as create false news in order to
create the story which definitely can raise the sale of newspapers. Another
example is when some users like to use a mobile phone or digital camera to
record the incident and publish it to You Tube which actually is violating human
being right.
There are shortcomings of
multimedia that may be came such as higher time consuming when it came to the
uses of multimedia as well as buffering of online streaming video. It is because
the large video required higher bandwidth in order to broadcast via the
internet. Another factor is information giving when we searching online are too
much, it makes troublesome for us to find the actual one because of its
complexity.
2. Multimedia is
shifting from being localized contained on a CD-ROM to being distributed
available on the World Wide Web. What are some of the implications of this? Who
will have access to the presentation? How will you keep it secure? How will you
distribute it?
Implications of multimedia being
shifted from CD - ROM to World Wide Web is a company managed to control all
aspects of businesses in efficient ways, expand their market growth, produce a
product or service with lower total cost such as lower cost of advertising. WWW
also success to the replaced problem of packaging, copyright, distribution and
production of CD - ROM which was borne by companies compare to CD – ROM which
only available to use for only a person who purchase it. In addition, more content
for interactive multimedia files can be delivered to end users quickly such as
full-text content from books is downloadable easy.
Many people around the world can
access multimedia or data simultaneously without limitation but firstly
required some specific software and hardware such as flash player and network
cable in order to run a multimedia presentation such as blogs, product reviews
and feedback.
There are many ways to keep it
secure either by organization, companies or individual. For example, companies
putting their software on websites with a requirement for password or keygen,
thus a customer need to purchase a reliable password first before they can
access to any of the programs. Another method is by using encryption method and
other available method such as compressing and processing.
We can distribute and introduce
the multimedia to the people via networking, internet and operating system by
using different kind of advertisement available in the websites. Millions of
users log on to the Internet everyday which gives greater visibility to the
online advertisers. Moreover, since this type of advertising is interactive, it
can offer businesses with feedback from its customers, therefore allowing them
to improve their way to run their business or the products they offer.
